Scientific Committee - Terms of Reference


1. The Scientific Committee will study and act on scientific matters of concern to the Society. The CMOS Executive, the Committee members or individual CMOS members may bring items to the attention of the Committee. Specific items of concern include: a. Organization and sponsorship of scientific meetings; b. Co-ordination of national and international scientific committees; c. Funding of science in universities, government institutions and private industry; d. Promotion of special research projects.

2. Subcommittees may be established to deal with issues requiring particular attention.

3. The Committee will met at least once a year and will prepare an annual report of its activities for Council. Meetings of the Committee are open.

Mode of Operation: The Committee will normally work and meet by e-mail and will hold at least one teleconference per year. It may also appoint ad hoc working or study groups as required.

Membership and Terms of Office: There shall be 5 or more members of the committee, each appointed for a three-year term with the option to renew. 

Committee Level: This is a Council-appointed Committee.

Report: The Committee will produce an annual report in accordance with Appendix III to the By-Laws.

Core Activities

1. To serve as the focus for scientific issues of importance to the Society.

2. To identify and promote research issues of importance to the Canadian research community in meteorology and oceanography.

3. To work with other CMOS Committees as appropriate to present scientific issues to government and public.

4. To act as the CMOS Scholarship Committee.*

5. To support the CMOS Executive and Council on scientific matters as required.
